Poppies too strong for Robins in County Cup
Stockbridge 0 Bournemouth 3.
Hampshire Senior Cup.
Stockbridge’s disappointing week on the pitch continued on Tuesday night when they went down to a tame 3-0 home defeat to Premier Division Bournemouth Poppies in the Hampshire Senior Cup.
Having been ahead when the lights went out on the original game last week the Robins had high hopes of progress but the visitors, who are bottom of the league having lost 11 out of 12 games this season, were a different proposition and in the end were comfortable.
Stocks never got to grips with the pace and strength of Martin Warren up front and he and Will Robinson went close before at the other end Dave Egerton floated a free-kick just wide.
Poppies’ wing man Connor Phillips then looked to be in on Dan Chapman’s goal but Dave Barker’s brilliantly timed tackle kept him out.
Sadly the reprieve was short lived as Warren’s flick put him free five minutes before the break and he beat Chapman at the near post to give his side the lead.
Moments later it was 2-0 as Phillips nodded in Warren’s long cross and the game was effectively over.
Robinson hit the bar with a header from a Fawzi Saadi free-kick then at the other end Egerton sliced a shot wide but despite the constant probing of he and Ben Thompson Stockbridge rarely looked likely to trouble Jamie Bray in the Poppies’ goal.
Darryl Phillips did find the net just past the hour but his effort was ruled out for pushing but on 74 minutes Warren once again latched onto a punt and his pace brought enough time to lob Chapman from 18 yards to wrap up a place in the next round.
While the club has had a couple of setbacks on the pitch work has begun on the pavilion and changing rooms at the Rec and it is projected to be completed early next year.
Fund raising efforts from club members plus support from local organisations, businesses and individuals started the ball rolling and with grants from Sport Aid, TVBC, Stockbridge Parish Council and the Hamshire Playing Fields Association to long awaited transformation is under way.
Tomorrow Stockbridge are at home again as they entertain Tadley Calleva in the Wessex League Kerry Miller
