WHITCHURCH suffered injury time heartbreak at Longmeadow on Wednesday night as they were dumped out of the League Cup by a ten-man Blackfield and Langley.

The two Wessex Premier sides squared up for the second time this season following their 3-3 draw back in August.

But it was Blackfield who came out on top in this encounter after Mark Ford snatched a dramatic extratime winner.

It was Whitchurch who had started the brighter as a Mitch Fear volley from outside the box flashed narrowly wide of Scott O'Rourke’s post.

Blackfield responded well and just past the half hour a curling shot by Jessie Gould forced a fantastic save from Brad Snelling who plucked a top corner bound ball out of the air with ease.

Watersiders captain Michael Durdey saw yellow for dissent shortly before half-time and ten minutes after the break was dismissed following a late tackle on Ryan Lambert.

The red card only seemed to fire the away side and minutes later a heroic goalline clearance from Whitchurch defender Cole Hinchcliffe kept the score at 0-0.

Agonisingly wide The home side went close to opening the scoring themselves after a Josh Harfield shot took a deflection and bounced agonisingly wide.

Blackfield continued to press for a winner and Gould should have given his side victory after taking the ball down inside the six yard box, only to edge the ball wide – taking the tie into extra-time.

As the match restarted, it looked destined for a shootout but Ford’s goal quickly changed that as the striker burst into the box and smashed it past Snelling late in the first period of extra-time.

Whitchurch came out fighting in the second period and felt they should have had a penalty after a foul on Lerone Plummer but instead saw Adam Pearson booked for a late challenge.

The Jam Boys continued to search for an equaliser but it wasn’t to be and the away side held on.

Whitchurch now face a tough test against Wessex League leaders Moneyfields tomorrow, knowing victory would see them regain top spot in the Premier.
