NEW Street recorded only their fourth league win of the season on Saturday but in doing so dented Amesbury Town’s chances of promotion to the Wessex Premier Division.
Paul Reidy’s side were behind to a Matt Cox penalty after Craig Wheeler had been felled in the box but the home side hit back capitalising on two defensive errors to take the lead through a Gary Thorne penalty on the hour and a Shane Lock strike which proved to be the winner 13 minutes from time.
Amesbury had a great chance to equalise with six minutes left with another penalty but this time Craig Lewis’ effort was saved by Dave Tasker.
The win puts New Street six points ahead of Romsey, who have a game in hand, and they are just a point behind Downton with the bottom four well adrift of Laverstock and Ringwood.
Tomorrow Street are home to New Milton Town at 3pm.
