England Schools Under 18 star Charlie Gunson was on target for Andover Town on Tuesday evening as the home side claimed a 2-0 victory over Brockenhurst in their penultimate game of the season.

The Sparsholt College student, fresh from an international appearance against Scotland last Friday, was one of the several changes made by manager Neil Benson, who also brought Gunson’s fellow international Michael Horne into the starting line-up alongside Tommy Wright and Jean-Terrach Bavangili.

The changes proved a success as Town had an early chance to take the lead after good play from Jordan O’Donnell gave Lewis Benson a free header which was saved by Brockenhurst’s Lee Knowlton.

However it was Gunson who stole the show at the Portway, after putting Town 1-0 up inside 15 minutes when he latched on to a clever through ball before bursting into the box and slotting it into the bottom corner.

Gunson’s fellow international Michael Horne was called into action not long after when he produced a fingertip save from Jamie Betteridge’s shot while Brokenhurt were denied twice by the crossbar shortly before half-time.

Brockenhurst continued to press after the break but it was Town who grabbed a second when Tommy Wright’s cross found Michael Dixon at the back post who squeezed the ball past Knowlton from a tight angle.

As the game came to a close, Gunson was denied his second by a smart save before he was brought off to a standing ovation from the home crowd.
