ANDOVER Town continued their recent goal glut beating rivals Whitchurch United 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Town had netted 12 goals in their last two games but a brace from Ollie Yates and goals from Suhael Odeh and Lewis Benson pushed that to 16 in a week and earned Andover another important win.

However it wasn’t the easiest of starts for the home side whose sloppy defending allowed Whitchurch two free headers inside the first 10 minutes, but both were comfortably saved by Jamie Bray.

Ironically a Whitchurch defensive error lead to the opening goal after 11 minutes when a riffled shot by Lewis Benson was blocked by Scott Hassell.

The defender failed to clear and was eventually chased down by Suhael Odeh who forced Andre Manders into a mix up with goalkeeper Brad Snelling before sliding the ball into the bottom corner.

Andover didn’t have to wait long for their second thanks to some magic from Lewis Benson.

The midfielder took the ball comfortably 25 yards from goal before teeing himself up and unleashing a emphatic curling effort into the top right corner.

The game’s electric tempo continued throughout the first half as both sides created chances but it was Whitchurch who began to press hard as half-time drew closer.

However they took a disappointing blow five minutes from time as captain Matt Austin was forced off clutching his right leg.

Dave Parry replaced him but the loss did not deter the visitors who earned themselves a dangerous freekick on the cusp of half time, however Reece Rusher’s effort curled over.

Town started brightly in the second half and scored again after five minutes through Ollie Yates.

The winger beat the offside trap to collect a perfectly weighted through ball and after a clever first touch, easily slipped it under Snelling to make it 3-0.

Andover continued to look dangerous going forward however it was the Jamboys who were next to find the net through Danny Phillips.

Slick passing between McCarthy and Phillips sliced open the Andover defence and it was left to the striker to side foot into the bottom corner after 84 minutes.

Town struck back minutes later to round up the scoring as a lofted ball aimed at Alex Dockree fell to Yates who easily tapped into the corner for his second and Andover’s fourth.

Midfielders Benson and Liam Gilbert were substituted in injury time to a standing ovation but the change did little to sway the outcome as Andover finished 4-1 winners.

Andover face an FA Cup replay against Hamworthy on Saturday while Whitchurch United face Newport (IOW) away.
