A DANNY Field penalty helped Andover New Street to a narrow 1-0 win away at Downton.

The away side started brightly and frustrated their opponents, who started the day five points ahead in the league standings.

New Street’s hard working midfield quickly took control of the game and after some quick football set up Kiran Le Brun who’s first time shot was saved by Downton’s keeper.

The Aldridge Vehicle’s side broke again when Sean Ayeomoni went on a run to then set up Harry Lawton whose shot went narrowly wide.

In the 33rd minute New Street finally got their reward when they were given a penalty after a Downton defender was adjudged to have handled in the area.

Danny Field stepped up and fired the ball past the goalkeeper to give the visitors a one goal lead.

Downton hit back in the second half but some strong defending from New Street maintained their narrow advantage.

Steve Turner was withdrawn with blurred vision and his replacement, Ben Matthews, did well with some hard working play to help assure New Street all three points.

Manager Paul Reidy said: “I was missing a few today but once again the young lads showed they can play at this level.

“What was pleasing the average age of team today was 22 which can only be good for the future.”

New Street play Ringwood Town at home this Saturday.
