ANDOVER and District Sunday League side George SMB collected the first silverware in the club’s history, scooping the Martin Turner Cup with a remarkable comeback win against Broughton Reserves.

The George, who play in Division Four, fought back from two goals down against their Division One opponents to win the tie 3-2 thanks to a late goal from Sean Anderson.

Broughton started the game on the front foot and should have been ahead early, were it not for the tremendous goalkeeping of George stopper Chris Brown.

The Division Four side were struggling to get a foothold in the game and it was no surprise when Craig Bates finally gave Broughton a deserved lead after 25 minutes.

George SMB took a further blow when they lost captain Gavin Burgess to injury with Adam Lovelock taking the arm band.

Despite this the George created a number of half chances, but were fortunate to only be 1-0 down at the break.

A stern half-time team talk from the management team of Joel McCormack and Andy Burgess seemed to have the desired effect at the start of the second half with George SMB pinning back Broughton for a sustained period.

However the game looked all but over when, against the run of play, a free-kick was diverted into his own net by player-manager Burgess to give Broughton a two goal cushion.

However the game took a turn soon after when 17-year-old Charlie Hampson came off the bench and seemed to inspire George SMB to fight back.

The response came almost immediately when a header across goal from Phil Robins was volleyed home by Anderson with 30 minutes remaining.

The George continued to press with Allan Ralph going close and pressure began to mount on Broughton.

The Division Four side’s persistence paid off when, with 15 minutes remaining, the referee awarded a penalty to George SMB for a handball in the box.

Substitute Hampson duly dispatched the penalty with ease to level proceedings.

The game looked all set for extratime, however in the 89th minute a fine ball from Burgess sent Hampson free.

The teenager passed the ball to Anderson who confidently swept the ball past the keeper to send the crowd into raptures at Foxcotte Park.

Broughton pushed forward seeking an equaliser in injury time but to no avail as George SMB held out to lift the Martin Turner Cup.
