A GUTSY performance from Whitchurch United could not prevent them falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of high-flying Team Solent on Saturday.

The two in-form Wessex League sides went head-to-head at Longmeadow with both teams hoping to build on their recent successes.

The Jam Boys went into the game with six wins out of their last 11 league games while their visitors boasted an impressive nine wins in the same period - despite a defeat to league leaders Blackfield and Langley on Thursday night.

Solent took the lead after 35 minutes through Tobi Adekunle but they were pegged back minutes later when Jack McCarthy headed home a Danny Phillips cross to equalise for Whitchurch.

The game remained level at half time but James Taylor scored the winner after the restart to secure all three points for the visitors.

The result leaves Whitchurch in 15th ahead of a difficult game away to Moneyfields on Tuesday night.
