TEN man Andover New Street's spirited attempt at a giant killing fell short on Tuesday night as they were knocked out of the Hospitality Cup by Southern League side Salisbury.

The Foxcotte Park side put in a battling performance against the Whites and held their visitors for over an hour until Jazz Beavis was dismissed for an off the ball incident.

Salisbury took full advantage, sealing a 3-0 win thanks to goals form Nathan Connelly, Christos Papakinstantinou and Claudio Herbert.

New Street fielded a strong side against their understrength opponents, who introduced a number of youth and development players into their starting 11.

Hoping to produce a cup upset, New Street worked hard and made life difficult for Steve Claridge's much-favoured side.

And it was the hosts who had the first real chance of the match on 24 minutes when ex-Andover Town player Chris Onoufriou brought down Beavis in the box.

Jamie Coleman stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but his effort was saved well from Salisbury stopper Nathan Ball.

Two minutes later goalkeeper Dave Tasker was forced to make a stunning save from Nathan Connelly's low shot as the Whites responded to the let off.

Tasker was forced into another save soon after when another ex-Town star, Claudio Herbert, was slipped through one-on-one, only for the stopper to block his shot.

New Street had the final chance of the half when Charlie Blake misjudged a header.

Beavis latched onto the loose ball and squared it to Callum Sweeney, whose effort flew over the crossbar.

Salisbury came out on the front foot in the second half and had two chances to take the lead through Connelly and Blake.

With the game level on 55 minutes, New Street remained firmly in the knockout tie.

But a moment of madness from Beavis, who was sent off following an off the ball incident, changed the game in Salisbury's favour.

The visitors took the lead five minutes later through Connelly's close range finish and then doubled their lead on 70 minutes through Papakinstantinou.

Herbert had the last laugh on 88 minutes when he fired a free-kick past a rooted Tasker to earn Salisbury a 3-0 victory.

New Street return to their Wessex League Division One relegation battle on Saturday, when they travel to Alton.
