No Butts as Glen returns to New Street

THE NEW season could well herald a return to Andover New Street of some of the best known football names in the town following the appointment of Glen Butterfield as manager this week.

Glen himself is going back to Foxcotte Park after leaving in January 2006 since when he took fellow Wessex League Division One side Amesbury Town to mid table security twice in the last two campaigns.

The Saxon Fields based Yorkshireman replaces joint managers Wally Kamara and Jimmy Wilson who stood down at the end of the last season and brings with him another ex-New Street man Pete Tunney, as his assistant.

Both are former Andover FC men as are Scott Tarrant and Brendan Summers, who may well return and who were part of the New Street side which was so successful at the end of the days of the old Hampshire League under Gary Prince and Graham Knight.

Butterfield is also interested in linking up again with former Lions boss Howard Goddard who is back living and working in Andover after some time abroad. Along with the town connection, a number of his squad from Amesbury have provisionally agreed to move across to New Street, including yet another former Lion in Chris Berntsen, Danny Harrison, Chris Smith and Jason Harsant while he is also chasing top scorer Nic Turpin.

Vinnie Rusher, who finished last season at Hellenic League champions Hungerford Town, is expected to sign Wessex League forms and he is hopeful of re-signing Ben McCready and Antony Waters.

“I am really looking forward to getting on with the job as I have gone from being at rock bottom following the situation at Amesbury to buzzing again as I have had such a positive response” said Butterfield this week. “This club has the potential to do so much better and the facilities here are as good as anything in the league” he added.

New Street’s pre season begins later than most as they get under way at the traditional Dango Tourament which kicks off at Foxcotte on Tuesday July 21 with the second semi-final two days later on the Thursday July 23.

As usual the final and third place games are on the following Saturday, July 25 and once again New Street have invited Andover FC and Whitchurch United although it is believed that Thatcham Town have been approached to return after a couple of seasons absence, replacing Blackfield and Langley.

New Street then play Alresford Town at home on Tuesday July 28 before hosting Wessex League Premier Division Winchester City on the following Thursday.

The final warm up is against Bishops Waltham on August 4 before the Wessex season begins in earnest on August 8.
