Last match decider for Penton Tennis Club
12:00am Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Other Sport
Nearing the end of the Sarum League summer season, Penton A’s penultimate match was against Division 3 leaders Downton. But with the holiday season in full swing, Penton was disadvantaged from the start having mustered only three players, who nonetheless set out to play the match hopeful of a draw if they could win four sets.
Stalwarts Peter Henderson and Ruth Repton took a 5-0 lead in the first mixed set, before Downton launched a counter attack and took three games, but Penton held on thanks to a strong service game by Henderson to take the set 6-3. The second was much more evenly contested and ended with a tie-break, when staunch defence by Repton against a barrage of ground strokes from the Downton man helped them hang on to win 7-6. Richard Chant teamed up with Henderson for the men’s doubles, only to be swiftly crushed by Downton 0-6 in the first set. True fighting spirit prevailed in the second and Penton steadily pulled ahead with Chant slamming away volleys set up by aggressive forehands from Henderson, leading to a 6-3 win. The final score for Penton, having had to concede the remaining four sets, stood at a 3-5 loss.
The top two will be promoted next summer season and following this match Downton have now secured their place as leader. Second place is up for grabs between Penton A and Victoria Park, who are Penton’s final opponents on Sunday. A win would ensure runner-up, but a loss would allow Victoria Park to equalise on points. So with the prospect of promotion in both teams’ sights, a tough battle in the last match is certain.
