Successful campaign at Andover LTC

The current strength of ability at Andover Lawn Tennis Club, demonstrated in both the Hants and IOW and Sarum Leagues, was repeated in this years’ Basingstoke and District League with the men’s A team setting the scene with yet another successful season.
Captained by Andy Moraghan, they won all eightmatches winning an amazing 70 sets and only losing four, thus comfortably heading the table by five points and retaining the Division 1 title. The Men’s B, captained by Trevor Blake, had a competitive season in Division 2, with a mixture of comfortable wins, a couple of draws and close defeats. They achieved eight points from eight matches and with a healthy balance of sets 38 for to 26 against they should finish mid table. The C team, again captained by Trevor Blake, was introduced this year to provide the opportunity for the club’s juniors and enthusiastic newcomers to gain experience of competitive team play. After a hesitant start they completed their season in Division 4 with a couple of wins, the final match proving to be a fine example of how they have improved their team play. Juniors Dan Arnold and Brad Fettes won their first two sets while veteran Glyn Jones and Rew Dinkele drew. In the reverse matches Jones and Dinkele drew again while Arnold and Fettes lost their first set and then, with a match draw looking likely, came back from 5-0 down to win the set 7-5 and the match 5-3.
This means the team will most likely finish third with an outside chance of promotion next year.
The ladies teams had a mixed season as the Ladies A, captained by Glenys Chambers, all but retained their title in Division 1.
Having defeated the eventual winners, Beechdown A, they slipped up against local rivals Goodworth Clatford, so had to settle for second place as Beechdown had a superior ratio of sets. The Ladies B struggled all season and will be relegated to Division 3 next year.
The performance of the Mixed A team, captained by Claire Reid, brought things back into perspective as they completed a successful season, being undefeated and retaining their Division 1 title.
