On a very hot day with very dry conditions, the Hampshire Golf Club’s annual Miller Bowl competition took place and with very firm and dry greens, the conditions were certainly not conducive to good scoring.

The format is foursomes stroke play and it is open to all mixed, men and ladies pairs, with half the combined handicap as the allowance.

The overall scoring was quite high but Barry Crane and Dave Preston managed a net 76 to finish third.

The mixed pairings seemed to fare better on the day as Guy and Sue Davis finished second with a net 74 but the deserving winners were Richard and Lori Channon who won with a fine net 73.

The prizes were presented by club captain Barry Thorne and were kindly provided by David Miller.

The June Stableford took place last Saturday and despite the firm greens, some players in Division 1 were able to master the difficult conditions.

Adrian Harris (11) fared better than most as his excellent 39 point score won the Division 1 prize.

Paul Ridge (11) also performed well to return 39 points but he had to settle for second place due to an inferior back nine score.

Mark Blaker (10) was also in the prizes as his 38 point score secured him the third spot.

In Division 2 the scoring was much lower but the best score of the day went to J Macdonald (22) with 35. Roy Struthers (17) finished in second place with 34 and Colin Munday (17) had to settle for third place with 32.

Seniors captain Ray Neath’s latest friendly was at home to Bramshott Hill and it was played in fine and sunny conditions.

Ray (17) had Ian McLeod (23) as his partner and by all accounts it was Ian who played some great golf to ensure the pair won by two up.

Vice-captain Alan Dixon (13) was paired with Bob Houghton (19) but they were unable to get a result as they lost 2 and 1.

Guy Davis (8) partnered Norman French (22) in match three and the only time they were behind was on the last hole as they lost one down.

Ted Richards (12) was paired with new senior member Rob Collicot (12) in match four and this would appear to be a good pairing as they won comfortably by 5 and 4.

John Rogers (12) and Phil Jones (20) played in the fifth match and they also came in with a good 2 and 1 victory.

The last match saw Richard Hale (14) playing with Mick Mumford (16) and they too came home winners by 2 and 1, which meant that The Hampshire won 4-2.
