Andover Tennis Club’s U14 and U16 teams have had a successful summer in the Basingstoke League.
The U14s, Will Moon, Harriet Steptoe, Sam Truscott, Tom Grossi, Michael Cooke, Tommy Mackie, Mark Mackie and Alicia Cole drew two of their matches against Preston Candover and beat Oakley by 8-0.
The U16s, Gregor Corcoran, Georgia Moon, Amy McDonald, Christopher Gregory, Billy Sutton- Mattocks, Tom Lee and Anda Manole beat Odiham 7-1 and 6-2 and beat Preston Candover 7-1 and 5-3 in some close and high standard matches.
Andover’s junior representatives in the Hampshire county Road to Wimbledon tournament last weekend did the club and the town proud.
Alicia played in her first tournament on grass and acquitted herself well.
Amy reached the U14 final just losing in a close match. In the Boys’ U14 event of 64 competitors Moon reached the quarter-finals even though he is still only 12 years old.
Lee reached the semi-finals and was only narrowly beaten while in the U10s Mackie reached the final and at one set all was narrowly beaten on a championship tie-break.
Competing against junior players from the other clubs around Hampshire and some schools, Andover’s representatives reaching a quarter- final, a semi-final and two finals was an excellent achievement.
Junior tennis is doing well in Andover.
