THE stars at Tidworth were out in force on Friday evening as more than 50 glittering honours were presented.

Families and friends were there to watch as trophies were awarded to seniors, juniors, ladies and gentlemen by club chairman George Long, Juniors’ chairman Brian Bosley, Ladies’ captain -Julia Wheeler and club captain Brian Hutchins.

The Hannah Turland Achievement Award, presented to a club junior for commendable achievement, is not awarded every year, but this year it was received by Katrina Duncan.

She has represented the county in the Wiltshire Girls’ county team, is also the club Girls’ Handicap winner, County Girls’ champion and the club Ladies’ champion, and also qualified for the Andlucia Junior European Open.

The ceremony was concluded with the presentations of the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Champions, Katrina Duncan and John Moule.

John was asked to respond on behalf of those receiving the awards and who congratulated the Tidworth administrative staff, Paul Brown, Gwen Phillips and Jan Edwards on their excellent arrangement of the evening and for its very slick operation.

l THE Hampshire Golf Club Seniors played their third round match of ten in the Winter League last week at home to Test Valley GC.

The conditions were good and team captain Alan Dixon partnered Guy Davis once again in match one and were just one up after ten holes but the turning point came with holes 11 and 12 which were both won by the home pair with a birdie and a par. They halved the following holes to give them a 3 and 2 victory.

Match two saw Paul Ridge paired with Ted Richards but they lost 2 and 1.

Vince Klass and Phil Jones did not disappoint with an excellent one-up victory in a tight match against good opposition.

In match four John Rogers was again paired with Barrie Thompson and they proved once more what a good pairing they are as they too won one up in another close contest.

The final match also went to the 18th green but sadly it was not to be for Dean Cresswell and Richard Hale as they lost one down. However, a superb team effort once again resulted in a 3-2 home victory which leaves them in second place with five points, one behind Alton, with next week’s visitors Andover third on four points.

This year’s Order of Merit competition is looking like it will be a very close finish. In top spot at the moment is Steve Pyle with 252 points with Matthew Woodman second with 251 and Paul Harrison third with 250 and so there is everything to play for.

Another competition the committee runs during the year is the Eclectic competition whereby the player’s best gross score at every hole over the whole year is recorded in order to calculate their best eclectic gross.

With just over a month to go, the Division 1 leader is Steve Pyle (5) with an amazing eclectic score of 53 from Paul Harrison (10) in second spot with 59. Guy Davis (8) and Derek Woodman (7) share third place with 60s.

In Division 2 the leader by three clear shots is Matthew Woodman (15) with 65 and there are three players sharing second place with 68s - Steve Hatcher (16), Ron Marshall (15) and David Miller (17).
