ANDOVER Golf Club’s Seniors captain David Kettell held his Seniors Open on Wednesday, June 17 at the Winchester Road course.

It took the form of a team challenge whereby the three best Stableford scores on each hole went towards the overall team score.

The best team on the day with 128 points was Richard Gilderson, Fraser Beach from the home club and two visitors, Greg Saunders and Chris Pottidger from Test Valley GC.

In second place were the home players of John Howarth, John Sheen and Des Pearce, who were joined by Tidworth member Mike Harris with 122 points.

Sheen was the best home player with 42 and was presented with the Kennett Trophy by Peter Kennett.

It has been played for since 2010 and the five past winners were all present trying to regain the major award of the Seniors season.

The highest score by an over-70 player was posted by the Seniors secretary Mervyn Perry, with 40 from Vince Klass of the Hampshire GC with 37.

The ‘skill prizes’ were won by Paul Ride from the Hampshire, with the longest drive on the 15th, the nearest the pin on the sixth was won by Barrie Thompson from the Hampshire and the nearest the pin on the 17th was won by home player Ron Levett, while four players scored twos – Levett, Roger Brooks, Thompson and Klass.

A nine-hole putting competition, sponsored by Greene King, was won by Guy Davis, who has recently rejoined the club from the Hampshire, with four single putts from Pat Evans from the Kendleshire GC with 15 putts.

The competition comprising 14 teams of four was played in super weather which made some holes tricky, especially as the greens were considered quick.

The course was in possibly the best condition in most players’ memory, having been maintained by a band of club volunteers for the last year and a half.

Seven players bettered the target Stableford score of 36 points with five competitors equalling it, which was a tribute to the condition of the course.
