TWO Andover youngsters have fought their way to regional amateur boxing titles.

Michael Urry and Brandon Thomson (pictured above) recently boxed at the Western Counties Amateur Boxing Championship which took place earlier this month in Tiverton.

The Devices Amateur Boxing Club pair, who both grew up and live in Andover, came out on top of their respective weight category.

Thompson, 19, who is a builder by profession, boxed in the light welterweight under 20 bouts championship, fighting last year’s national champion in the final.

Thomson, who has been involved in the sport since he was 13, fought four two-minute rounds against his opponent, out-boxing him to earn his second Western Counties title.

The former Harrow Way School, who is currently sponsored by PH James Building Contractors, stayed composed throughout the fight and boxed one of best his bouts to date.

Following the victory, Thomson told the Andover Advertiser: “Boxing is my life.

“I’ve worked so hard to get to where I have, but I still have more to give and hopefully soon step up to the professional rankings”

Meanwhile 26-year-old Urry, who also trains with Paul Wilkins and Liam Wilkins at Devizes ABC, boxed in the welterweight under 10 bout championship.

The full time tree surgeon, who was returning to boxing following an 18-month travelling experience around Australia, fought three twominute rounds.

He started sharply, landing strong punches and taking control of the final.

Urry was forced to dig deep in the third round to maintain his advantage but did well to stay in control of the fight and eventually take the victory.

Both boxers train up to six days a week to compete in the championships, taking part in a 10-week coaching session prior to the event.

The programme includes a mixture of circuit training and sparring, plus maintaining a strict diet.
