ANDOVER Athletics Club star Holly Mills smashed two long standing records as she won double gold at the South of England Indoor Championships.

The talented U17 athlete, who returned to the championships after winning two golds in 2015, broke the competition’s long jump record before returning on day two to set a lightning quick time in the 60m hurdles.

Mills went into the competition, held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre near Enfield, London, ranked as the UK’s number one U17 long jump athlete and lived up to her reputation with a record breaking leap of 6.07m on her first attempt.

Despite having a limited jumps training over the winter period, Mills completed three further jumps over 6m, including a best of 6.12m, to secure long jump gold for the second consecutive year.

The impressive leap broke the previous Championships’ record of 5.97m, which had stood since 1995.

Mills was back in action on day two as she competed in the 60m hurdles.

Having comfortably cruised through her heat in a time of 8.77secs she was in confident mood going into the semi-final.

Mills was targeting the championship record of 8.58secs, which had stood since 2004, and did so in style as she stopped the clock at 8.52secs to ease into the final.

In the final another fast time of 8.59secs saw Holly crowned champion for the second successive year.

Her semi-final time is also the fourth fastest of all time for U17W and just 0.03sec off the quickest ever.

Also in action at the championships were two other Andover Athletics Club U17W athletes from coach James Coney’s sprints group.

Darcie Henderson was in action in the 60m where she progressed to the semi finals with a time of 8.11secs, finishing second in her heat.

Despite equalling her PB of 8.04secs, and finishing third in her semi, she fell just shy of a place in the final.

Jasmine McClutchie joined Henderson in competing in the 200m with both girls producing indoor PBs in their heats.

Henderson clocked 26.36secs while McClutchie finished just behind with a time of 26.44secs.

However, neither was able to improve on these times in the semi-finals and both missed out on a place in the final.
