ANDOVER Athletics Club star Holly Mills continued her remarkable season with another double gold medal win.

The talented teen, who just last month won two golds at the South of England Indoor Championships, was in fantastic form once again last weekend, winning both the U17 long jump and 60m hurdle event at the England Athletics National Indoor Championships.

Mills attended the competition, held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, as clear favourite for the long jump event, with her season’s best jumps far beyond that of her competitors.

And having won both the indoor and outdoor national under-17 titles last year, she was looking to defend her title as well as enhance her growing reputation as one of the UK’s best upand-coming long jump athletes.

Mills set out her intentions from round one with an impressive leap and new indoor PB of 6.13m.

But while that was strong enough for gold, it ended up being only her third-longest leap of the day as she extended her lead with a fifth round jump of 6.22m.

The jump was the second-longest jump indoors by a British person under the age of 17, second only to Margaret Cheetham’s 6.25m in 1985.

Mills added a 6.16m leap in the sixth and final round, qualifying her for a place in the Team GB squad for the European Youth Championships in July.

Day two saw Mills in action in the 60m hurdles.

She cruised through the heats in a steady time of 8.86secs but showed what she is capable of in winning her semi-final in the fastest time of the day – 8.66secs.

Mills faced a tough final but fired out of the blocks well to lead from the start and finish in a time of 8.67secs despite suffering with fatigue.

The win was Mill’s first national indoor track medal and her second championship title of the weekend.

Also in action at these championships was fellow Andover AC teammate Darcie Henderson, who was competing in her first-ever national championships in both the 60m and 200m events.

In the 60m, Henderson qualified in fourth for the semi-finals with PB time of 7.98secs, before being knocked out in seventh with a time of 8.00secs.

On day two, Henderson competed in her favoured 200m event, finishing second in her heat with another PB time of 25.75 secs, finishing behind eventual winner Ciara Neville.

The two faced off again in the semifinals, and despite carrying a slight knee injury Henderson ran another solid 25.75secs, finishing in fourth.
