Tennis Vets off to flying start

ANDOVER Tennis Club’s men’s Veterans team have won their first two matches in Division 2 of the Over 55s.

In their first match, Alan Keenan and John Snowden and John Chaffey and Barry Austin won 4-0 away to Alverstoke. Their second match was home to Kingsgate Winchester where Snowdon and Keenan and Chaffey and Trevor Blake won 4-0. This represents an excellent start as it is the team’s first season in this league.

Andover Men’s C had a tough match against a strong Beechwood A side in the Basingstoke League. In the first round Snowden and Patrick Burnell failed to capitalise on opportunities to break their opponent’s service games and with Burnell struggling with his service they lost the first set 2-6. The second set was closer but once more their opponents proved the stronger winning 6-4. Meanwhile Andrew Higgs and Mark Reynolds, playing the Beechdown second pair, took some time to settle down and, unfortunately lost the first set 2-6, before fighting back to win the second 7-5. In the reverse matches Snowden and Burnell had a comfortable victory, 6-4, 6-2. Higgs and Reynolds started well against the Beechdown first pair, taking a 4-1 lead but then failed to hold serve and the momentum switched to their opponents who went on to win, 7-5, 6-1. Thus Andover C were beaten 5-3 but not disgraced.

In Division 2 of the Basingstoke League Andover Men’s B hosted a depleted team (only one pair) from Whitchurch. Starting with a four sets to nil advantage, Andover’s first pair set the scene by winning 6-2, 6-0 with Martyn Isherwood’s all round game proving both too much for their opponents and a confidence boost to his partner, John Mathias, who produced his best game of the season.

The Andover second pair, Keenan and Snowden, maintained the winning streak, with Keenan’s aggressive net play disrupting their opponents rhythm and Snowden refusing to lose serve, they won 6-2, 6-4. An 8-0 victory if in somewhat hollow circumstances.
