The forecast was awful all day on the day before last Sunday’s 20th annual Bourne Valley tennis event in St Mary Bourne.
Heavy overnight rain had cleared by dawn and it was decided to go ahead - helped by prayers at the 8am service in St Peter's Church for which the event was to raise funds. Throughout the day, with rain in surrounding villages, the Bourne Valley remained dry and mostly sunny, a great relief to the organiser Philip Winchcombe as this was the last such event he was to organise - next year neighbour Rob Childs will be in charge, so the event will continue.
The entry was slightly down on previous years but almost 100 players took part on 12 courts and the funds raised were still in excess of £1,000, increasing the total raised over 20 years to around £25,000.
