Andover RFC fly the flag at Alton Sevens
Andover U13s played their first Sevens tournament on Sunday and took to it like ducks to water.
Tommy O’Brien set the tone from kick-off against Gosport and Fareham and with pace that belies his stature and a coupled with a brace of deft hand-offs opened the scoring for Andover.
Loui Smith and Jacob Culley-Wilson secured possession and harried at the breakdown to ensure plenty of ball for Angus Haigh and Michael Cooke to open their accounts, while scrum half George Lishman added a hat-trick of tries to cement a 65-5 opening win.
Further pool games against Alton and Haslemere saw Andover triumph with wins of 30-5 and 20-10 respectively, with secure work in the pack from Jake Shinton and Austin Doherty. This led to the debutants atop their pool thus facing a semi-final against Farnham.
In a game which saw Farnham come back in the second half from 20-0 down the fine line between teams became apparent as the slightest positional error or momentary drop in work rate was punished. Andover however secured a 25-10 win to place them in the final against High Wycombe.
High Wycombe played a strong first half to create a 20-0 lead but two quick tries in the second half saw Andover threaten to claw back an unlikely win led by George Ward with his constant power and aggression.
Alas it was not to be but the Woodstock Heating sponsored squad can be justifiably proud of their spirited performance to round off a hugely successful season.
