Elderly woman dies in house fire
A pensioner has died in a house fire despite attempts by neighbours to save her.
Firefighters were called to the property in Warrington Road in the Brislington area of Bristol at 7.20pm on Sunday.
The woman, who has not been identified, died at the scene after attempts to resuscitate her failed.
Avon Fire and Rescue Service said smoke from the blaze, which is not thought to be suspicious, prevented neighbours from getting inside her home.
A fire service spokesman said: "Once on scene crews in breathing apparatus gained entry to the house where they found a fire on the ground floor.
"Firefighters used a high-pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire in the kitchen area.
"Before crews arrived neighbours had tried to enter the home to help a woman who was believed to be still inside.
"During a search of the property firefighters found the body of an elderly woman. Despite the efforts of fire and ambulance crews, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The cause of the fire is being investigated, but at this stage it is not believed to suspicious."
