Dame Maggie Smith and Christoph Waltz were early winners on Golden Globes night.

Dame Maggie picked up her award for best supporting actress in a TV miniseries in Downton Abbey.

Waltz won the supporting actor Golden Globe for his role as a genteel bounty hunter who takes on an ex-slave as an apprentice in Django Unchained.

The win was Waltz's second supporting actor prize at the Globes, both of them coming in Quentin Tarantino films.

Homeland won the Golden Globe for best TV drama series. The other nominees were Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey and The Newsroom.

HBO's account of the rise of Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential campaign was an early winner. Game Change earned the Golden Globe as best television miniseries. Julianne Moore, who portrayed Palin, earned best actress honours for a miniseries or movie.

Dame Maggie was not present in Beverly Hills to pick up her award.

Pop star Adele and co-writer Paul Epworth won for best song for their theme tune to the James Bond adventure Skyfall.

"Oh, my God!" Adele gushed repeatedly, before offering gratitude to the group that presents the Globes. "I'd like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press. I never thought I'd say that."

Homeland's British actor Damian Lewis received the TV drama actor Globe. He said: "I'd like to dedicate this to my mum, looking down on me bursting with pride telling everyone around her how well her son is doing in acting."
