Three people have been taken to hospital and two men arrested following a disturbance near a college.

Two people were found to have suffered stab wounds, while a third is thought to have been struck with a blunt object during a fight in Cole Bank Road, near the Hall Green campus of South & City College, in Birmingham.

All three, believed to be in their 20s, are said to be in a stable condition.

An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault. They are both being held in custody and will be questioned in due course, West Midlands Police said.

A spokeswoman for South & City College Birmingham earlier confirmed that none of its staff or students had been involved in the incident.

Detective Sergeant Mark Allen, from Force CID, said: "We're still trying to piece together exactly what happened earlier this afternoon and are currently trawling CCTV and speaking to a number of witnesses.

"I'm keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened or anyone who has any information which they feel may assist our investigation."

DS Allen added: "Whilst we're in the early stages of the inquiry, it's believed that none of those involved were connected to South & City College."

Mike Hopkins, principal of South & City College Birmingham, said: "This incident does not involve our staff or students and did not take place on our grounds, but we are deeply shocked to hear something like this has happened within our community at Hall Green, which is a safe and friendly place.

"The safety of our staff and students is paramount and we'll do anything we can to assist the police in their investigations."
