Bercow thanks Evans for service
Speaker John Bercow has said he is "warmly grateful" to Nigel Evans for three years service as a Deputy Speaker after the Ribble Valley MP quit after it emerged that he is to be charged with sex offences against seven men.
Mr Bercow said he had accepted Mr Evans' formal letter of resignation and details of an election for a replacement will be given when the Commons returns in October after the party conferences.
He said: "I have received his resignation with sadness. I wish to thank Nigel for his three years of service to the House as Deputy Speaker, in which he has proved to be highly competent, fair and good-humoured. He has been a loyal and valued member of the team of deputy speakers who assist me in chairing our proceedings. I am warmly grateful to him."
Mr Evans was in the Commons to hear Mr Bercow's remarks. He sat on the Tory benches and was flanked by Conservative MPs Brian Binley and Oliver Colvile. He is due to make a personal statement to MPs after Prime Minister's Questions.
As deputy speaker, Mr Evans sat as an independent MP. But he will not take the Conservative whip and will sit as an independent MP for his Ribble Valley constituency, his spokesman said.
Mr Evans, 55, is accused of two offences of indecent assault, five counts of sexual assault and one rape charge. Shortly after leaving Preston police station on Tuesday night, he vowed to clear his name in relation to the charges, which date back to 2002.
He said: "Whilst I'm saddened this case has not been closed today, I am certain of two things: firstly, that I am innocent; and secondly, that my innocence will be demonstrated.
"Having informed my fellow deputy speakers, Lindsay Hoyle and Dawn Primarolo, my association chairman and my staff, I can confirm I will now resign as Deputy Speaker. However I will continue to work hard for the people of the Ribble Valley from the back benches where I first started my political career in 1992."
Mr Evans will appear before magistrates in Preston on September 18.
The indecent assaults are alleged to have been committed between January 1 2002 and January 1 2004; the sexual assaults between January 1 2009 and April 1 2013, and the rape between March 29 and April 1 this year.
