Cocaine worth £60 million was seized during a joint operation in the Caribbean between the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the US Coastguard, the Ministry of Defence has revealed.
Armed Forces Minister Mark Francois said the US helicopter flew from RFA Wave Knight in the counter-narcotics operation on January 22.
A 1.3 metric tonne haul of cocaine was recovered, with an estimated wholesale value of £60 million, Mr Francois said in a Parliamentary answer to Tory MP Lee Scott (Ilford North).
Mr Francois said: "The Ministry of Defence routinely deploys a Royal Navy frigate or destroyer and a Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel to the Caribbean under the Atlantic Patrol Task (North).
"We are also working to improve our co-operation with regional partners. For example, we have recently concluded an agreement with the US Coast Guard to allow their helicopters to operate from an RFA vessel."
