Sam Powell has been ruled out of Wigan's World Club Challenge match on Saturday with an ankle injury.

Powell, who can play at half-back or hooker, suffered the injury during training and will now not feature in the showpiece game against the Sydney Roosters.

A statement from Wigan read: "An initial diagnosis has ruled him out of the game with Sydney Roosters whilst the full extent of the injury will be investigated by Wigan's specialists on their return to the UK next week.

"Powell, who developed through the famed Wigan youth development system had forced his way into head coach Shaun Wane's reckoning after impressing last season and during pre-season."

Wane added: "It is a big blow for Sam who has worked really hard in pre-season but with his character I'm sure he will bounce back stronger."
