Tesco forges ahead with plans for superstore
Would be great if the Tesco got built. There is nowhere to do a weekly shop in Romsey at the moment so most have to shop in Southampton and take most of their other business there too. Why to the NIMBYs always get the loudest voice? Here here!

Store boss fears long-term cost of Broadlands Tesco

Corrected version (earlier editing problems - sorry )
There are just 4 Bradbeers stores in the UK, Tesco has nearly 3,000.
So I am rather annoyed by those who choose to criticise Bradbeers in this "Broadlands' Tesco" debate.
Bradbeers is a quality and traditional department store and we really do NEED stores like this. They are a dying breed. Romsey and New Milton are very lucky to have them and we do not want to loose them.
Tesco on the other hand is just a common supermarket selling goods, sometimes of dubious quality. Its ethic is greed and dominance - no wonder I guess when you consider that its DNA has been inherited from the infamous Dame Shirley Porter (the Tesco heiress).
So Tesco cares nothing for the small companies struggling to make an honest living, nor for those whose livelihoods will be lost if it "moves in".
The world doesn't need yet another Tesco store nor another Tesco-town!. We've had our fill of Tesco.
Should Tesco move into Broadlands it will suck the life out of the town of Romsey and cause havoc on our narrow bypass.
On the positive side Tesco will in all fairness, offer over 100 soulless low paid jobs to those who wish to work rotating-shifts probably on a 24 hour rotating shift basis. And once here Tesco will do what exactly what it wants to do and NO ONE will have the power to stop it, just as it seems to have done in other small towns it has inhabited.
And remember, just because Tesco says it "HAS NO PLANS" to do something (like build a petrol station or stock pharmaceutical goods) does not mean that it WONT do these things.
So for those who want a Tesco in Romsey and on the famous estate - just beware of want you wish for.
(I am not an employee of Bradbeers nor do I have any connection with them.)

Tesco will be great for Romsey. Competition is good. Tesco is a great British success story, the most successful British retailer overseas, directly employing over 500,000 people, don't knock British success. Other good retailers in the Romsey area will survive, only the poor will disappear.

Apart from apparently being an insomniac 'macogan' is obviously not a resident of Romsey, but his comment about our 'little town' sums up this whole debate. The attitude of the Chamber of Commerce is understandable as traders who are not competitive will fail.Traders who provide a unique service will prosper.I wouldn't call myself an insomniac am just someone who only works nights due to my job.... :)
