CATHERINE Bearder’s letter had me checking the date of your newspaper to make sure I hadn’t mysteriously lost three months, but no, it wasn’t 1 April, it was still only 4 January.
This MEP, who is so embarrassed by the record of her party that she cannot name it, persists in peddling misinformation.
We didn’t join a club, we joined a process, treaty enshrined, ‘towards ever closer union’ with the resulting ever changing rules.
Made the EU our own: with one voice among 27 and qualified majority voting the norm, who does she think she is kidding?
British-style liberal economic rules, ensuring fair play: tell that to the communities who have lost their post offices; our state concerns denied aid while Air France gets a generous state hand-out; French-owned UK utilities raising prices 20 per cent here while they are limited to 3 per cent increases at home; the young female drivers paying much more for their car insurance; the men buying much reduced annuities. What cloud cuckoo land is she living in?
Financial benefits to families: she hasn’t seen a cost/benefit analysis of our membership (something successive Governments have refused to produce) and got columns mixed up has she?
Remember sugar doubling in price?
Remember our Chancellor not able to reduce VAT even when he should?
Extra jobs in the south-east: who have they gone to? With free access to our welfare state for all the inhabitants of the poorer eastern European countries (and who can blame them?) now members of the EU, they haven’t benefitted UK nationals much. At the same time how many jobs have been created on the continent to produce the massive trade surplus they enjoy with us? How many jobs has the EU subsidised out of the UK and into the rest of the EU (a la Twinings)?
British standards of justice?
Would we extradite someone without reviewing the evidence (European Arrest Warrant) and for something not even a crime in this country? Would we lock somebody up for months without charge?
Would we make it an offence to be afraid of something (xenophobia – as defined by the EU!) or for criticising the Government?
There is much more to say but no space to say it but as UKIP gathers ground we can expect a lot more of this woolly misinformation from those wedded to the EU dream. The sooner we are completely out of this rotten, corrupt and corrupting organisation the better.
