Care home plans are a total farce
10:44am Thursday 15th August 2013 in Your Say
THIS is a response to the proposed closure of five care homes across Hampshire.
Once again the reasons given will include inadequate facilities and inflated maintenance costs.
A couple of years ago several of us, particularly those with elderlyrelatives in Cherry Orchard care home, faced a futile and uphill battle to try and prevent its closure.
From the outset we were told it was only a possibility and that no decision would be made until the consultation period had ended some four months ahead.
In fact the decision was inevitable and the meeting chaired by Cllr Felicity Hinson was a farce.
As someone interested in world history, I would describe the whole procedure as the nearest thing possible to the show trials in Russia during the Stalinist regime of the mid 20th century.
What was particularly disappointing was the fact that not one local councillor or our local MP showed any inclination to question the proposal and demonstrating a complete disregard for many people they represent.
Until the interested parties have at their disposal financial clout and can demonstrate an overriding argument against these moves, there will be five more care homes boarded up and awaiting some lucrative development.
Old people are not going to decrease in numbers and the argument about allowing people to stay in their own homes for as long as possible is fine up until the time they require 24 hour care; then what?
I offer my best wishes for success in preventing any of these closures but I won’t be holding my breath.
