I'm all for rail scheme
10:54am Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Your Say
I’M all for developing a heritage line between Andover and Ludgershall.
Almost everything is in place already – just needs a platform at the Ludgershall end, which I assume would be sited behind the Co-op store.
That section is fairly simple to create, but getting to Collingbourne – that’s something different.
Firstly, the security gates into the MOD rail yard – then there is the Devizes road. How would they get across that, since the road bridge was taken away many years ago?
Beyond that point the trackbed remains, but one bridge has been blocked by landfill and just short of Collingbourne there is another bridge with the top missing.
At the moment the Andover end has plenty of sidings for carriages and it would be also possible to build an engine shed.
However, there was talk by Network Rail a couple of years ago of turning that same area into extra car parking.
But good luck to the scheme. It would certainly boost tourismin the area and therefore benefit the local economy.
