Free parking is misguided idea
2:25pm Thursday 12th September 2013 in Your Say
I REALLY would like to voice my opinion publicly over two topics that have made it to these columns recently.
First, free car parking won’t work!
This is because most of those people who are employed in the shops and other town centre businesses will simply stop car-sharing, walking, cycling to workor parking in the nearby streets and simply fill the car parks all day long, as will those who live close by.
Then everyone will be writing in to complain about how they can never find a space near the town!
Second, even if cyclists carry insurance it will not be valid if they ride, illegally, on our pavements.
One dark night recently a pavement cyclist narrowly missed me as I pulled off my drive.
On challenging him he replied that he had to ride on the footpath because he had no lights.
Oh well, that’s all right then!
Currently, cycling on apavement is punishable by an instant fine of £30.
I would like to see a much firmer stance taken by our local bobbies on those who flagrantly breach this and other laws such as jumping traffic lights – and that, of course, includes the cars at Red Post Bridge!
