I WAS pleased to see that common sense has finally prevailed with regard to the issue of the flying of the Union flag over civic buildings in Test Valley.
The U-turn performed by Ian Carr (TVBC having initially dismissed the idea as “too expensive”) should be commended by all.
It takes a brave man to admit he judged the strong feelings regarding this matter wrongly and to then change his mind.
On the basis of him stating that the petition which was started had nothing to do with the reversal of this decision, and stating that all anyone had to do was approach him directly, I would like to ask Mr Carr: “Can you please consider the many requests to have the war memorial returned to the town centre?”
I don’t mean the sort of sham consideration that went on at the Cabinet meeting of TVBC some two-and-a-half years ago.
I mean properly consider the matter. That is, to first canvass the populace of the town as to whether, in the light of the upcoming centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and the many events taking place nationally, the people of Andover would like to see their memorial put back outside the Guildhall (under the newly resplendent flag), at the heart of our community, where so many of us believe it belongs.
I know you personally oppose a return, for reasons that I and (I believe) a majority of Andoverians who care about this issue can’t even begin to understand, but if you could at least consider the proposition seriously, I know you would win the respect of many of your detractors in the town, including me. You have a great opportunity to do something positive for the town in terms of commemorating the conflict which the memorial represents, so please don’t waste it.
If at the end of the day the people of this town say “no”, then we can leave it where it is, and I will happily say you were right to have the stance you do.
But let’s at least find out what people really want, one way or the other.
By agreeing to fly the flag you have shown you can listen to the views of the residents of this town.
Please, Mr Carr, show the same respect and consideration to us with regard our war memorial.
