Councillor has served our town well
11:13am Thursday 17th October 2013 in Your Say
I WAS shocked to read on the Andover Advertiser’s front page this week that Councillor Tony Hooke has been accused of bribery.
I live in Cllr Hooke’s constituency and was pleased when he won the seat, bringing some new blood and new ideas to the council.
It is early days, but among his many aims is to renovate Andover town centre and encourage visitors and shoppers to our town, which has been allowed to degenerate beyond recognition over recent years.
He also supports local causes, such as Neighbourcare, a well used and badly needed service in our community.
It was a wonderful gesture for Cllr Hooke to donate his county yearly allowance of £12,000 to Neighbourcare. Funding had been stopped by the council and this was a lifeline for the service.
Why on earth should he not donate his money to charity, and how can this be interpreted as bribery?
This allegation does indeed seem as though it could be politically activated, maybe rivalry within the council, who knows?
We can only hope that Cllr Hooke is cleared of these allegations and can maintain his place on the council – Andover needs him and others like him.
