I READ about the mass objections by parents of schoolchildren to the new car parking proposals with a mixture of disbelief and amazement.

To consider a 400-metre walk to be unacceptable for a five-year-old is ridiculous, particularly in the current nationwide effort to encourage more exercise for children and adults alike to improve fitness and reduce obesity.

I think ten minutes spent walking to the schools would wake the children up a bit for the lessons ahead.

As long as the routes from the drop off points to the affected schools are deemed safe, there really can be no objection to these proposals.

Perhaps it will encourage more children to walk the whole way to school, rather than being driven, which would be the best outcome.

I walked a mile each way to school in all weathers from five years old with other children and am none the worse for it 50 years later.
