REGARDING the letter about getting compensation for pothole damage.

It has always seemed to me unreasonable that councils should be expected to do this.

Potholes are not created by councils but by cars and other vehicles, so surely compensation should come from insurance — or from motor tax funds.

Weather plays its part, of course, but a major cause is the ever-increasing numbers and weight of vehicles — especially on roads not built for such volumes.

I hope that any money paid out is not then saved by closing libraries, cutting back on services for the elderly and youth etc.
