Pollution? I think not

First published in Your Say

PERHAPS Mr Challoner should give his subject a better ‘overview’, to understand why his anti-fracking meeting was sparsely attended.

The so-called risks from fracking have been grossly exaggerated by those who at heart, are not ‘pro-environment’ but anti-capitalism, and to whom fracking protests are simply a convenient ‘vehicle’ for their political ‘posing’.

The archetypical scare story that it ‘causes’ cancer, is likely to illustrate this more than anything. Cancer is also caused by excess indulgence in alcoholic drink, burning tobacco products and food.

The ‘clean’ myth about the diesel engine has ‘exploded’, with NO2 emissions (and the rest), said to cause thousands or premature deaths.

Yet look how many of these actually otiose, gross 4WD vehicles (and the ‘people carrier’) are deemed ‘absolutely essential’ for the daily commute to/from work, yet none of them ever carry more than one occupant — the driver.

Worldwide, 1.5 million deaths a year in road accidents is considered the acceptable ‘price’ to be paid for the ‘advantages’ of the car. Pollution, Mr Challoner? Find out what the word ACTUALLY means.

Fracking does not cause earthquakes; it does not pollute ground-water; it does not cause excessive leaching of methane into the atmosphere.

I would be interested to know where Mr Keenan gets his evidence that says fracking doesn't cause any harm to the environment or to people. We only have to look at what is happening in US to see that fracking DOES cause harm. In Oklahoma there have been thousands of quakes since fracking started! Before fracking the incidence was few and far between. And that is just one state! Steel and concrete is supposed to form a seal from any pollutants leaking into the immediate area but 6% of wells fail immediately leading to methane leaks....methane being a bigger threat to global warming than CO2 emmissions! So methane CAN leak into aquafers!.. Perhaps he should have attended the meeting in Stockbridge and he would have found experts from the gas/oil industry who are against this way of energy production! And if they are against it then we should take note! The water companies have expressed concern too.

Thousands of gallons are needed to frack a well... about 9 million gallons ......drinking water that is often in short supply! Perhaps he doesnt mind his clean water being put to this use. This 9m gallons will produce 5.6m gallons of radioactive sludge......where is that going to go?
A 5 acre site is needed to service 1 well, roads will have to built to take the many lorries needed to transport the sand and chemicals used in the fracking. The roads around the Andover area are already chock a block. The rig will be 45m high with a flare, the noise the drill makes is equivalent to 2 jet engines. Some 5000 wells could be drilled along Hants Surrey Kent, 33000 wells have been talked about for the NW. So Imagine the noise, lorry movements etc needed. An earthquake did occur in NW after a frack, which was eventually abandoned. Damage was done to homes.....will people be able to insure their homes in future?

In US, farming has been greatly harmed by fracking, sick animals, sick people.......how will our already overburdened NHS cope with people made sick by the pollutants in the atmosphere and in food chain???

If Mr Keenan would like some real evidence and not just opinion gleaned from biased newspapers and TV, then take a look at Fracking Hell UK on Facebook, KWIFF on face book, Frackfree Solent - there are plenty of sources on there which will give real information and statistics. Also watch the film Gasland....yes is pertains to US but it gives an insight into the real dangers of what can only be described as ecocide! We are a small island compared to US and this is not the way to go forward for our energy needs .....we need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels which are finite and look to alternatives and it needs to be done now!!!

Yes, Balcombe in West Sussex has been an anti-capitalist stronghold for generations, and yet it is a Conservative area. I suggest there may be a contradiction in your theory somewhere along the line. As for your dismissal of the harmful effects of fracking on the environment one can assume you will be first in line to have a dozen or so wells surrounding your house, just to test out your assumption.
