I WAS born and bred in Andover and for the last 55 years I have regularly cycled around many of the surrounding villages for pleasure.

It dawned on me recently that in all those years I had never seen or visited Bury Ring. After a bit of difficulty I found it, enjoyed my visit and decided it was just as impressive as Danebury.

Since my visit I have asked many people if they knew about it and very few did. They all knew about and had visited Danebury but not Bury Ring.

What is strange about this little knowledge is that it is near the town and within walking distance.

Directions are as follows: from Upper Clatford take the Red Rice Road; once you get to the top of the hill the road curves left and shortly after there is a small, rough, grass pull-in on the left-hand side. The short footpath to the ring is on the right-hand side.

Bury Ring covers 22 acres and was an Iron Age fort where King Canute stayed in 1016 when he fought Edmund Ironside at the Battle of Andover. It was also occupied by the Romans.

I have given directions because there is no signpost.
