NOW that the citizens of Scotland are to be given more devolution is it not right that the English regions should have a greater say over their own affairs as well?

On this issue I agree for once with Roy Perry, the leader of the Hampshire County Council, who points out that Hampshire is mentioned in the Ango-Saxon chronicle of AD757, long before there was a united England. This part of the country deserves devolved powers not new artificial regions.

I have written to Sir George Young MP asking him to write to David Cameron in support of these proposals and Cllr Perry is writing to every Hampshire MP on the subject.

What do other readers think on this issue?

Finally, although I have criticised him in the past, I would like to congratulate Gordon Brown for his role in the Better Together campaign, which put over well the case for Scotland staying in the United Kingdom. Alex Salmond should have been much more vigorous in repudiating his over zealous supporters!
