REGARDING petrol prices in Andover.
Several years ago I asked the then manager of Tesco why their prices were always higher than the norm. He insisted that it was because of the cost of delivery. I suggested that this was a nonsense since the prices then at Tesco Salisbury and Winchester were normally 2p cheaper than Andover.
I also suggested that I did not believe that Tesco would make a delivery solely to Andover and not include other Tesco fuel stations.
The absence of a competing petrol station from either Sainsbury’s or Asda allows Tesco to set the price for petrol in Andover.
When I confronted the Tesco manager I was driving thousands and thousands of miles per year. Even though it was a company car I always topped up with petrol on my way back to Andover and not in Andover, and I continue to do so now.
I did write to Asda and Sainsbury’s head offices to mention the empty Approach Garage and invite them to make a bid to occupy that site.
Sainsbury’s acknowledged my letter but not a word from Asda.
