HAVING previously been somewhat critical of the town council for its lack of imagination when it comes to Andover’s commemoration of the centenary of the First World War, I was hopeful that its final planned event would at least go some way to making up for the lack of imagination shown thus far.

Sadly, recent pages of this newspaper provided yet another practical demonstration of that body’s ineptitude where the matter is concerned, when it pictured just a dozen people (a quarter of them civic leaders) turning out for the Christmas Day truce football match at Vigo Park.

I would also take issue with the use of the word “celebrate” in conjunction with that event on the town council’s website.

There is nothing celebratory about war, that war in particular, and the use of the word is crass at best.
