I WOULD like to reply to the letter by Councillor Woodward, regarding the work on Hampshire’s roads.
He stated that the council had resurfaced 45 miles of roads in the first half of the financial year.
With 5,280 miles of roads, this means that each stretch of road will be resurfaced around once every 60 years.
I strongly suspect that the life of a stretch of road is significantly less than this. Therefore the council is not resurfacing enough.
At this rate the roads will continue to deteriorate, as is evidenced by the pothole repairs averaging out at 20 per mile. It is a common response by authorities to state we have spent this much.
But if it is not sufficient to deal with the problem, then it is a meaningless statement, as the standards of our roads will continue to fall to that of a second tier country.
