IN reply to the letter from Reg Wood, regarding “Up Yonder”.

Up Yonder was owned by my uncle’s mother and father Mr and Mrs Dance, who were landowners and farmers.

Robert Dance, my uncle, was the eldest son and when he was courting my aunt would ride down on a black stallion to Anton Road where they lived to visit her.

There were four brothers - Robert who went on to farm at Inkpen, Nelson Dance who farmed at Finkley Manor Farm, Dover Dance who farmed in the Kingsworthy area and John Dance who had business interests in the town. There were also two daughters.

As a child, when my cousins came to visit, I would visit their grandparents and remember playing on the wooden balcony and going into the orchards.

Mr and Mrs Dance died in the late 1950s.

I am not 100 per cent sure but think Neville Close was built on this land, I have emailed my cousin to see if he has any photos of “Up Yonder”.
