I HAVE just read your article about Cllr Chris Lynn’s words over A-fest.

As a successful event organiser for over a decade, deeply rooted in Devizes and the wider area of Wiltshire, I would like Chris to consider the “value” of an event not by some £ figure, but by what else it achieves.

Has it provided people with inspiration? Were people’s experience a positive one? Is only the negative thing he has to say about it the attendance? I note from your article that the council gave £1,000 for the event? Irrelevant of footfall, the return on £1,000 of their investment certainly was value for money.

Am I also to understand that this was the first event? How can it be deemed a failure if it has no reference point on which to judge?

When the £1,000 was signed off, it should have been just that. A satisfactory belief that you have provided good for your community, and you did. You shouldn’t then judge the level of good, against how many people are able to trace that back to you, and give you a slap on the back. Take pride in your decision and ability to create roots level art and culture within your community, you need no further ego massage.

I hope you sign off another £1,000 next year, and the community are able to reap the rewards of such artistic merit.
