THE Hawker Siddeley HS748 supplied to the RAF in the late 1960s was a twin-engine, turbo-prop, transport aircraft and was named ‘The Andover’.
I was born and bred in Andover, have flown in an Andover and have flown from RAF Andover.
An Andover is showing in silhouette form on the RAF Memorial opposite the Chalk Hill Blue pub.
For decades The Andover was successfully used by HM Queen’s Flight.
Some trials for the aircraft were also done at this same airfield.
The name chosen for the HS748 was from the Avro Andover, a single engine transport bi-plane (650 hp), five of which were produced for desert use in 1923.
