I INVITE you to meet the invincibles of 1954.

It is the East Street School football team that went unbeaten the whole season through. We played against most of the school village teams as well as all the primary schools here in Andover.

Headmaster Mr Harrison and his deputy Mr Spurling would bundle half the team in one car and half the team in the other.

Morris Minors were never so full. The two car convoy would journey to far-flung places such as St Mary Bourne and Overton. It felt like the other side of the world to me. Even now the smell of Morris Minor leather seats reminds me of those jam-packed, mud-covered trips.

The red and white Arsenal shirts were so big I could run around in mine. When it rained they soaked up the water, so much so it felt like I was playing in a suit of armour. I am indebted to Rodney White for this splendid ancient image where you can see that some of us could not afford football socks.

This 60-year-old picture will no doubt stir up unexpected memories for the surviving lads.
