I HOPE you don’t mind me writing another letter but I just had to write about Mr Goulding’s letter in the paper of September 18, because I also remember that air raid on that summer afternoon in 1940.
I was working at the steam laundry then and I was over in their receiving office at the time. I don’t remember the siren but of course it would have gone off on the roof of the Guildhall.
I know all those places Mr Goulding talks about in his letter. I know where the Harrow Way goes into Charlton Road. We were living around Shepherd’s Spring at that time and we were all out except Mum and she told us that she saw that bomb come down, which must have caused the crater that Mr Goulding talks about.
Our front door looked straight across that way.
There was this hill called ‘Coleman Hill’. I think it’s ‘Artists Way’ now.
I expect a lot of the older Andover people remember that air raid.
