‘SPRING Surprise’ was brought to the April meeting of the Broughton Floral Club by Marion Catt with her demonstration, which was full of humour and made for a thoroughly relaxing evening.

Marion’s first display consisted of western hemlock sprigs giving a light outline to which she then added hard ruscus and photinia sprigs, leather leaf fern and grevillea stems, deep burgundy red carnation ‘Spider Man’, orange roses and acacia fronds to complete a fresh spring bowl.

A ceramic container made to look like silver birch was the base for a tall upright display with stems of green cornus, pussy willow and ivy berries around the base. Marion then added tall stems of white chincherinchee, small narcissi, yellow germini and white tulips resulting in an unfussy design which would be happy in any situation.

A bird’s nest design was the next on the agenda. To start, a tall piece of contorted hazel was used to give height, rolled aspidistra leaves with aucuba japonica sprigs were the base for three tall bird-like strelitzia reginae stems, yellow spider chrysanthemums, pink tulips and a stem of green orchids completed this stunning arrangement.

A ‘Love and Happiness’ theme was represented with a pink mini bucket as a container, stems of liatris spicata, fern fronds, pink carnations, galax urceolta leaves and small pink veronica stems which were all highlighted with pink medelino sticks.

Lastly, a long wooden box was filled with copious foliage and flowers, starting with hard and soft ruscus stems, white antirrhinums and lisianthus, green carnations and avalanche roses finishing with pale pink double lilies. This was a splendid end to the evening. The club will be seeing Marion again in the not too distant future.

The club’s next meeting is on 3 May when ‘Strictly Flowers’ is Martina Coleman’s title for her demonstration. Visitors are welcome 7pm for 7.30pm.
