POSITIVE news rarely makes the headlines.

As a keen cyclist in the Andover area, we tend to only hear about our sport when someone has been caught doping, or when an act of road rage has “gone viral” on YouTube.

Road rage in particular is a perennial hot-topic on social media, and one that continues to stir emotion in all those that seem to feel a sense of entitlement to the road, regardless of the mode of transport they are using.

I’ve cycled over 5,000 miles in and around Andover over the years, and I have to say that the vast majority of road users are incredibly considerate and patient. We have many miles of beautiful countryside in the immediate vicinity and getting out and exploring this wonderful landscape is a delight to many, whether they are onfoot, or on wheels. The villages that surround the town are often frequented by cyclists as they circumnavigate the busier roads of the centre.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those considerate drivers who make passing through these places a peaceful experience.

Yes, there is a minority of impatient and careless drivers, but there are impatient and careless cyclists in equal measure. It is a two-way street!

Respect is the order of the day, and life is about enjoying the journey and not getting to the destination slightly quicker!
